Badgells Wood is the perfect setting to practice and learn about one of the most relaxing and rewarding pastimes; working with your own hands to carve beautiful objects straight from the forest. We are lucky to have Tom King, a keen bushcraft practitioner and avid outdoorsman, joining us to run these courses.
The day will cover tool selection, maintenance and safe use, wood selection, carving techniques and theory, ‘the art of the spoon’, before guiding each participant to crafting their own utensils from green timber. All of this will be achieved using only simple and traditional hand tools; the saw, knife, axe, froe and hook knife.
This is a highly enjoyable and practical course, designed to give novice or new carvers a comprehensive introduction to the craft.
Participants should bring a packed lunch and outdoor clothing for this course. Tea and coffee will be available all day.
Here’s a video showing Tom as he sets up and runs a spoon carving day with us.
