WWI trench & army camp

We have a 1km run of  WWI trench that runs through the woods.  Originally dug by A’ Company Volunteer World War I soldiers, it was part of a much longer stop-line running on top of the downs in case of invasion. We’ve been clearing a section of it to mark the Centenary and have put in a few sandbags as an army camp for the children to get involved.

I had a slightly surreal moment whilst clearing with smoke drifting across the trench and the sandbags whilst the birds sang away in the background to a beautiful setting sun.
